Migration from SQL Server 2012 Enterprise to SQL Server 2019 Standard

Since SQL 2019 Standard now has TDE built in, what are the gotchas if any with migrating from 2012 Enterprise to 2019 Standard.  I had planned to install a new instance of SQL and after scripting out the users and service accounts detach the DB's from 2012 and attach to 2019.

Are there gotcha's that I need to be aware of or should this upgrade go as smooth as it seems?

Thanks!

The VSTA designer failed to load: "System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80004005):

I've just reinstalled the OS and apps on my PC.  When I open a script task and click "edit script..." I get this message:

------------------------------
Cannot show Visual Studio 2008 Tools for Applications editor.
------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The VSTA designer failed to load:  "System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80004005): Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component.
   at VSTADTEProvider.Interop.VSTADTEProviderClass.GetDTE(String bstrHostID, UInt32 dwTimeout)
   at Microsoft.SqlServer.VSTAHosting.VSTAScriptingEngine.EnsureDTEObject()" (Microsoft.SqlServer.VSTAScriptingLib)
------------------------------

When I run

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE>vsta.exe /hostid SSIS_ScriptTask
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE>vsta.exe /hostid SSIS_ScriptComponent

VSTA fails to start up and I get:

---------------------------
Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Applications 2.0
---------------------------
Registration information for this application needs to be updated. To update, log on as an administrator and run this command:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\vsta.exe /HostID SSIS_ScriptComponent /setup
---------------------------

I've read around the various suggestions on how to fix this and so far have tried the following:

  • Reinstalling SQL 2008
  • Removing VSTA (then reinstalling from x86\Setup\trin_aide.msi on the SQL 2008 setup iso)
  • Following the steps in Jason H's blog
  • Doing a repair installation on SQL 2008
  • Running BIDS as administrator
  • Creating a new script task rather than trying to edit an existing one
  • Scouring the registry for "unusual things"...!
  • Counting to 10

None of which have made any difference.

My setup:

  • Win 7 Enterprise 64bit
  • SQL 2008 standard (client tools) patched up to SP3 (installed from en_sql_server_2008_developer_x86_x64_ia64_dvd_x14-88839.iso)

It might be worth saying that I have seen this problem previously when I installed SQL 2008 the first time on my current pc (same OS and general environment).  I spent about a day on it and did eventually get it working - but (annoyingly) I can't remember what I did.  Either I am now less able, less lucky or less inspired but I'm getting nowhere this time round.  The one thing that rings a bell is HonestDeer's reply to this previous MSDN post (Wednesday, May 11, 2011 3:30 PM).  I seem to remember I changed a reference somewhere to a different version of VSTA and it started working - can't remember the specifics though..

Please help!

Roger.

I just downloaded and install SQL server 2019 on my windows 10. But i was not able to connect to it via SSMS.

I went to the services and saw that "SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)" service is not started. When i start the service it shows message

"The sql server mssqlserver service on local computer started and stopped"

I checked for event log and there is an error "SQL Server is terminating a system or background task Logwriter Task due to errors in starting up the task (setup state 8)."

Hi All,

Could you please guide how to install SQL SERVER without SSIS service as we come to know we have to pay some cost if we are using it; During installation I am keeping default setting and checkbox selected. Now want to avoid installation of SSIS Service in SQL Server installation.

Thanks.

In SQL Server Mgmt studio, the database properties/General dialog shows 5 for number of users.  Is this a limitation?  If not, how can the number be changed?

Can I do a in place upgrade from SQL 2014 Cluster and upgrade it to SQL 2016 and not break the cluster?

Trying to find out if there is any way to do an in place upgrade from SQL 2014 Cluster and upgrade it to SQL 2016 same cluster and if so I cannot find any documents on that I see upgrading SQL 2014 to SQL 2016 which is not that hard but not sure about the cluster or would it be better to build a SQL 2016 Cluster and migrate the databases?

Any help would be appreciated.

Is there a trick to getting this installed correctly?  Everything works great until it gets up to starting the service.  Here is the complete section of my setup log file.

SQL Server Native client failed because a higher version already exists on this machine...

HI there,

I installed SharePoint (MOSS) 2007 on a Win 2003 SP2 server using SQL Server 2005 ENT and later installed SQL 2005 SP2. At the time I didn't install the client tools on the server (which apparently I should have).

I now attempted to install client tools on the server but I got an error message "SQL Server Native client failed because a higher version already exists on this machine...  To proceed, uninstall the higher version and then run SQL Server Native client setup"

I failed to find on the net a client .msi that included SP2 and a bit of Goggle research pointed to the fact that I cannot easily uninstall SQL 2005 SP2.

Log story short I am at a dead end: I cannot install client due to an higher version and cannot uninstall the higher version.

Any suggestions on how to get the client tools installed on the server.

Thank you,
Luis

SQL Server and Active Directory Trusts

Hello,

In order to stop using SQL users on our environment we decided to use Windows users. So this is the full picture.

We have AD A and AD B. AD B has the databases (SQL Server 2016) and trusts users from AD A to login.

I have set up windows logins from AD A in the databases in AD B.

The problem is the connectivity is really slow. I do not think this is a bottleneck issue but rather some bad configuration.

To see what happens on the server side I set up an audit and asked a user to login with windows authentication.

I noticed that there are 3-4 login failed whenever he logs in. Also these appear when he tries to do something.

Any tips on improving performance?

Thank you,

Bogdan

SQL Server 2019 Linux - Issue with SQL Agent Startup

Hi All,

Hoping someone can help me

I followed the instructions on installing SQL 2019 on Linux here - > docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/linux/sql-server-linux-setup?view=sql-server-ver15

I have tried this on multiple distributions

Redhat, AWS Linux 2, Ubuntu, etc

The installation goes smoothly, and the SQL instance works fine however in every case i can't get the SQL Agent started properly.

I have followed the instructions here to enable the agent, after doing

sudo /opt/mssql/bin/mssql-conf set sqlagent.enabled true
sudo systemctl restart mssql-server

The sqlagentstartup.log shows the following

Hello,

How do I know what is missing and what not in 2017 version?

Is there a full list of 2012 and 2017 that I can compare or does anybody have a better idea ?

Thanks,

rob

why does the Agent Service default to Manual during installation

Every time I install SQL Server Agent defaults to a startup state of manual. Why is that?  I have never seen a 'real' install without having Agent being active.

SQL Server 2019 installation for ISV Royalty Licensing program

Please, does anyone know, how the ISV under ISV Royalty Licensing program gets the access to SQL 2019 installation media and keep? I have to admit, we are ISV Royalty DISTRIBUTOR but have no access to it neither any idea what to do. (MIcrosoft CLT tool does not give any reasonable result)

It looks, Microsoft quite neglects this old-fashioned model of ISV engagement, what would you say?

thanks for any advice

Hello,

We would like to go from SQL Server version 2012 to 2017, but need to know , how big the impact is.

Like the applications build with Visual Studio...which code will fail.

So, I need a nice document that simply shows which objects will be lost or are changed.

Is there such a document ? Or can I make one myself ?

Greetings,

Buffer Pool Extension With Multiple Files

So I support a Dynamics CRM environment where we have deployed Buffer Pool Extension to expand the buffer pool size for clean pages. This works okay in theory except that I am getting long query times with waits for "EC". Looking around this seems to relate to buffer pool extension waits. I am concerned that while expanding the available buffer pool I have introduced another bottleneck with the BPE.

Looking at the output from querying sys.dm_os_buffer_pool_extension_configuration one of the columns is file_id. To me this would indicate that BPE possibly supports multiple files, like with other database files. Does anyone have any experience with this? All documentation and examples I have seen online only show a single file. I would be interested to see if my current issues could be mitigated with adding multiple files, I just need a way to try it to be able to test.
