When i tried to install the setup, i got this error:

Unable to open Windows Installer File 'E:\SQL\x86\setup\sql_engine_core_inst_msi\sql_engine_core_inst.msi' Windows Installer error message: The system can not open the device or file specified ' Click 'Retry' to retry the failed action, or click 'Cancel' to cancel this action and continue setup.

I went to the path and tried to run the file manually; then i got this error:
This Installation package could not be opened. Contact application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package.

I would like to ensure this here that the installer is not corrupted, I tried it on another PC and its working fine there. Please help!

Isapi dll and sql server

I have two isapi dlls on a Windows Server 2003 machine with IIS 6.0. The dlls rely on a adodb connection to a mdb file in the server. A few day ago I've installed on the server machine MS Sql Server 2008 ; the installation has gone fine and I can access sql server files via Management Studio, but the dlls don't work anymore: I get "Internal Server Error" when I call them from the browser (note that the dlls are always connected to the mdb file, not to Sql Server ...). Any ideas?

Connection problem with SQL 2008R2 and SQL 2005 on same server

$

Windows 2008R2 server had 2 instances of SQL 2005 installed, BACKUPEXEC and ACRONIS.
I installed SQL 2008R2 Express (64 bit), created database, and our software runs fine on the server.
When I try to run our software from a workstation, this error appears:
Connection failed:
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: -1
[Microsoft][SQL Native Client]SQL Interfaces: Server doesn't support requested protocol [xFFFFFFFF].
Connection Failed:
SQLState: 'HYT00'
SQL Server Error: 0
[Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Login timout expired
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: -1
[Microsoft][SQL Native Client]An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL
Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default setting SQL Server does not allow remote connections.

I have tried establishing a connection using ODBCAD32, and I can select the correct instance
using this tool, but I still get exactly the same error message.

Since I am not responsible for the software running on SQL 2005, I am trying to be cautious in making any configuration changes.

The SQL 2005 install is 32 bit, while the SQL 2008R2 install is 64 bit (I can reinstall 32 bit version if this is an issue).

SQL Server Browser is running, but it is the 2005, 32 bit version that is running.

Windows firewall was turned off.

Any help would be appreciated.

SQL Server Management Tools? Can't install, but?

$

Hi, I have Windows 7 with all updates on my Dell laptop. It's a solid state drive, 8 gig of ram, etc, etc,.. Great little laptop..

I'm also running Windows Visual Studio 2012 Pro. I also play with Webmatrix. Anyway, I'm trying to use the Management studio tools, but I always get a message / popup box that says one or more components are missing. Please re install. I've done that, and I've uninstalled several times. I even went and download something when I searched that was an update for SQL server, and it still didn't work.. I can use the old version of Management tools for VS 2008 and it works fine. I don't get it?

Anyway, I also have the SQL server tools for Visual Studio 2012 which I've not played with, but wondering if it has the ability to connect to hosted sql servers? If so, that's all I really need, and the ability to design databases visually such as one can do in the management studio tools, but if SQL server tools for Visual Studio will do the job, I'll just get rid of the Managment tools. Any help would be most appreciated..

Thanks so much.

Update built-in to Visual Studio 2013 SQL Server 2012 SP1 up to CU7

I've installed Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate on Windows 8.1 X64 RTM.

Now, when I try to update built-in to Visual Studio 2013 SQL Server up to Cumulative Update #7 I got the following error: « The version of SQL Server instance Shared Component does not match the version expected by the SQL Server update. The installed SQL Server product version is 11.1.3366.16, and the expected SQL Server version is 11.1.3000.0 » and as result upgrade status: «Not applicable ».

One more strange thing is when I run VS2013 in SQL Server Object Explorer I can see the version of SQL Server, which is 11.0.3000 and not 11.1.3000.0 or 11.1.3366.16.

Does anybody tried to update built-in to Visual Studio 2013 SQL Server to latest version? So, how can I update built-in to VS2013 SQL Server 2012 SP1 up to CU7?

Thanks.

I'm trying to install Windows Azure PowerShell on my Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise laptop. As a prerequisite, it needs to install Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB, I but keep receiving an error:

Service 'SQL Server VSS Writer' (SQLWriter) failed to start. Verify that you have
sufficient privileges to start system services.

The service that it tries to use by default is the Local Service. I verified that it has log on as a service privileges and even did a restart. Same error.

any ideas?

How to install SQL Server Express 2012 from outside of windows intaller?

$

Hello.

I am having a problem installing SQL Server 2012 Express on a Windows 7 64 bit machine. The problem is that the installation runs endlessly eventually having to end the task to get out of it. After researching on the internet this is a known problem. The installation gets into an endless loop. It is discussed here:  http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/741476/

At the above url discussion the Microsoft SQL Server team posted this response:

Posted by Microsoft on 8/13/2012 at 12:01 PM

Hi all, thanks for taking the time to report this issue. Installing SQL Server 2012 from within a Windows Installer transaction is not supported. Setup needs to be launched from outside of windows installer and can't be done from a custom action.

thanks,
[SQL Server Team]

I originally thought this meant just download the .exe files and run them. HoweverJonathan Dyke on 10/19/2012 at 5:16 PM (same url) also writes:

Even manually running the The SQL Server 2012 express installation by double clicking on its executable produces the same behavior.

So I have 2 questions:

1. How do I "launch setup from outside of windows installer and not from a custom action"?

2. When I brought down my endlessly looping installation program I was warned that the previous operation of setup would need to be undone before reinstalling (something like that). Do I need to do any cleanup before reinstalling? I was trying to install to C:\Program friles\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.SQLEXRESS and the later directory was not created yet.

Thank you for assisting.

Hello,

I'm installing SQL Server 2012 but the install doesn't even start.

I've Visual Studio Ultimate 2012 too but with or without, the install don't start.

I never had SQL Server on this machine (no uninstall).

It's not a compressed install too.

I've made some screenshots but I can't show them...

The error :

The SQL Server license agreement cannot be located for the selected edition, STANDARD.

Thanks for helping me :)

Hi,

I'm setting up two new SQL 2012 SP1 Standart Edition on two brand new VM's.

Setup goes smoothly until I select all the components and then I press Next.  The setup seems freezes showing "Please Wait":

Looking at the setup log I'm finding a error that never seen before and that I'm not able to find any valid references on the internet:

Cannot enable Database Mail XP

$

I'm trying to turn on Database Mail.

I set the flag in db_config, did the reconfigure, and for good measure stop/started SQL Service (and thereby SQL Agent service too) [and I have since rebooted the server]. I have created a Profile (which I think is correctly set up)

If I try to send a test email I get

"SQL Server blocked access to procedure 'dbo.sp_send_dbmail' of component 'Database Mail XPs' because this component is turned off as part of the security configuration for this server. A system administrator can enable the use of 'Database Mail XPs' by using sp_configure. For more information about enabling 'Database Mail XPs', see "Surface Area Configuration" in SQL Server Books Online"

EXEC sp_configure 'Database Mail XPs'
GO

gives:
name minimum maximum config_value run_value
----------------- ----------- ----------- ------------ -----------
Database Mail XPs 0 1 1 1

so it appears that the setting is indeed set.

SELECT is_broker_enabled FROM sys.databases WHERE name = 'msdb'

gives 1

EXEC msdb.sys.sp_helprolemember 'DatabaseMailUserRole'

gives:

DbRole MemberName MemberSID
-------------------- --------------------------- -------------------------------
DatabaseMailUserRole Certificate_UseDBMail_Login 0x010600000000000901000000F6...
(my login is sysadmin, so should be OK unless I have done something goofy)

EXECUTE dbo.sysmail_help_status_sp

gives the same "'Database Mail XPs' ... component is turned off" error above.

I also, latterly, set "SQL Mail XPs", but that hasn't made any difference either

@@VERSION =
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP2) - 10.0.4067.0 (X64)

EDIT:
Microsoft SQL Server Standard Edition (64-bit)
O/S = Microsoft Windows NT 6.1 (7601)
Is clustered = False

(Not the latest SP, I'm arranging for that to be installed in case that brings a solution, but that needs scheduled downtime which will be a while obtaining)

Thanks

Can't install CU7, wrong versions being reported

$

If I check the properties of my SQL 2012 Standard server it shows the Version as 11.0.3381.0 which matches the CU6 level as shown here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2772858

However, when I try to install the CU7 update I receive the following message:

The version of SQL Server instance MSSQLSERVER does not match the version expected by the SQL Server update. The installed SQL Server product version is 1.1.3000.0 and the expected SQL Server version is 11.0.2100.60.

Just below this message it shows a Patch Level of 11.1.3381.0

None of these numbers show up anywhere in the build list at the above link. No idea why this is happening but right now I'm unable to install CU7. Any help would be most appreciated.

Thank you!

Upgrade from SQL 2008 with mirror to SQL 2012 with always on

I have a SQL Server 2008 with mirror configured on it.

I'm planning to upgrade to 2012 as rolling upgrade. this way I will end up with mirror on 2012.

Now I need to configure the AG on the always on.

Can I  stop the mirror process and then add the mirrored DB to the AG as is, or do  I need to rebuild the mirrored replica from scratch?

Should I consider the cluster quorum in any way if I'm planning to implement only manual failover to my Availability group?

As far as I understood the cluster quorum is relevant only for automatic failover. am I right?

Hi.

I have this error during installation SqlEngineConfigAction_install_confignonrc_Cpu64 (component of SQL 2014 CTP2) on virtual machine (Windows Server 2012 Standart). Logs in Event Viewer are clean. And I have no idea, what can I do with such problem. Maybe, you know and can help me?

Later in Event Viewer appears such message (maybe this message can help to resolve this problem):

SQL Server 2012 installation issues

$

Hi,

The other day I installed SQL Server Express 2012 as a new instance (I already have an Express 2008r2 instance, which continues to work), using SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe from MS site. This seemed to work well and I restored some databases to the instance and also wrote some SSRS reports against it. So all seemed well. When I rebooted my computer two SQL Server updates automatically downloaded and failed to install (KB2716442 and KB2674319), unfortunately I did not know they had failed and on next reboot the following update was added KB2793634 and it also failed.

Now SQL Server 2012 is left in a script stage and I cannot access it. I have tried uninstalling SQL Server but I now get a message Remote Procedure Call Failed: Error Code:0x84BB0001.

So I'm stuck with a SQL server instance that I cannot use or uninstall, has anyone got any ideas on how to move forward. This is the Summary.txt output and this is thelog output folder

I'd be happy just to clear it all down and start again!

regards,

Anthony
