Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup 'specified account already exists' Error

$

When attempting to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (Setup) I get this error:

The following error has occurred:  The specified account already exists.

Although the installation (setup) processes appears to continue normally, all 14 features show failure up completion.

Question: What 'account' is the setup checking and how is it conflicting with the installation?

Hi, non-SQL person looking for some guidance. I'm trying to copy databases with permissions from a Win2008 server with SQL2008R2 to a Win2012 server with SQL2012. I'm running SSMS on the 2012 instance, and intiating the Copy Wizard from there. I'm getting the following error. Thanks.

SSRS Report Server Could not establish connection. The underlying connection was closed. Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS Secure channel

Hi

Had to un-install and then re-install MS SQL Server 2012 with SSRS.

After we re-installed we are able to get to the Web Services page but not the Report Server page and get the above error message. We need to use SSL and when we bind the cert in RS Configuration Manager it says it does this successfully on the WebServices tab. We also do a similar exercise on the ReportServer page.

Any help warmly welcomed :D

Thanks

removing clustering setup for SQL Server on VMware server

$

This is an unusual question that I'm hoping someone can offer advice.

I have a SQL server 2008 cluster setup between 2 VMware ESXi hosts (4.1) with shared FC LUNs for the data, tempdb and any required cluster devices (ie. quorum).   The SQL server is part of our active directory infrastructure.

Unfortunately, we have been experiencing issues with our shared storage; so I would like to dismantle the cluster and make use of vmdks instead.   Ideally, we remove the clustered nodes and go back to a single node.

However, when removing the cluster setup, the IP of the database changes.   So the cluster IP will be removed and the single node IP will be used.   Unfortunately, a lot of our apps point to the database via IP (yes, I realize this was a mistake and will be fixed to use hostnames in the future).

To get around the IP problem, I'm thinking of doing the following:

1) remove the 2nd node from the cluster.  Now I have single node in a cluster.

2) create the appropriate number of vmdk disks and move the databases (user, master, model, msdb) and any other cluster devices (quorum) to the vmdks

Since I'm keeping the single node in a cluster, I don't need shared storage anymore (since there will never be a failover to a second node) and I'm assuming the newly created "clustered" vmdks SHOULD work since the SQL Server cannot differentiate between local vmdks or shared disks.

Now I have a cluster with a single node and no dependencies on shared storage.  But most importantly, I can keep the cluster IP intact.

Does this approach work?   Is there an easier solution?   This is just temporary until we can correct all of our apps to replace the IPs with hostnames.  then the cluster will be completely uninstalled.

Error in converting SQL 2014 Trial to Full version using VLKey

Hi,

I am currently trying to upgrade my SQL 2014 evaluation version to the full version.

I have purchased a Volume License for SQL Server 2014 Server/CAL and have extracted the product key from the ISO File.

I have verified this product key with the product activation department and it is confirmed that it is a valid product key "ProdKey3 SQL Svr Standard Edtn 2014 00204 PA/BP VL:GVLK Pre Pidded"

However, when i input the product key in to the server, it is showing me the error message:

The SQL product key is not valid, enter key from certificate of authenticity or SQL server packaging

Checked on the version of the evaluation and this is the edition - Microsoft SQL Server 2014.0120.2000.08

The site that I am activating the server on does not have any internet connection, does this affect the activation?

Would there be an alternate phone activation method for converting to Trial to Full?

Kindly Assist. Thank you.

SQL 2014 upgrade advisor - time out

Hi

We're looking to upgrade to SQL 2014 from a SQL 2005 instance, and have been having time out issues when running the upgrade advisor against the 2005 instances.  Once the wizard completes - the report indicates that various steps failed with time-outs.  Is there any way to expand the query timeout?

We have tried running this locally on the server as well as remotely with the same results.

Thanks

sql server 2008 r2 installation help

I need to install sql server 2008 r2 on 64 Windows machine. It should be 64-bit, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP3) - 10.0.* (X64). My previous co-worker said the following:  "SQL has been installed as requested, but not configured. I believe that you will be prompted to install Management Studio when you walk through configuration of the product. The installer for the product is on the root of C: if you are prompted for its location. If you look in programs, you should see a SQL menu item with an installation/configuration tool inside." I believe he downloaded "SQLServer2008R2SP3-KB2979597-x64-ENU"

When I look in programs, I see "SQL Server Installation Center", and when I click on "Installation" -> "New Installation or add features to an existing installation, it brings me "Browse for folder" (Browse for SQL Server 2008 R2 Installation Media). I am thinking something is missing... Is it possible that the file "SQLServer2008R2SP3-KB2979597-x64-ENU" needed to be applied after initial installation? If I check "services", I do not see anything Microsoft SQL service related, except the following 4 files: Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v2.0.50727_X64, Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v2.0.50727_X86,Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v4.0.30319_X64, Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v4.0.30319_X86.

Can you please help me to figure out what has been done so far and what I need to do in order to install standard edition on this box?

AVG/Quorum Location

$

Hi all,

We've been tasked in creating a automatic failover between SQL servers that reside in different datacenters in the result of a complete datacenter failure.

We've worked with AVG before, and have used file share witness as the quorum. The problem we see is, because we only have two datacenters, the file share has to reside in a datacenter that accommodates one of the SQL servers, therefore if that datacenter goes down, so does the quorum, and the cluster will fail.

Therefore I can only see two ways round this - either host the file share quorum in a third datacenter/remote location, or create two clusters, each with a file share quorum, one in each DC with write databases on each primary node, so if we did lose one datacenter only one cluster gets knocked out.

Or is there a more elegant solution? The goal is to have automatic failover.

Thanks,

SQLSERVR.EXE High Commit Usage causing a low virtual memory condition

$

I have a few 2012 R2 Servers, recently I've been noticing system instability and the following messages in the event log relating to the Windows Internal Database(as that's the only SQL installed):

Windows successfully diagnosed a low virtual memory condition. The following programs consumed the most virtual memory: sqlservr.exe (2388) consumed 4406611968 bytes, w3wp.exe (1364) consumed 180613120 bytes, and mcshield.exe (2112) consumed 111489024 bytes.

I've tried using SQL Management Studio to set a maximum memory and still get the same issue, I've tried increasing the Swap File with similar results.

sqlservr.exe uses very little RAM 100-200MB, The total WID size is about 35MB, So I have no clue on what's going on the COMMIT Size fills up to about 98% of the swap file size within seconds of starting the WID service and slowly grows until I start getting error's and the systems start locking up.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Still no success installing SQL Server ... despite all your help and suggestkions

After all the ideas and help from here and almost 4 hours with a Dell technician, I'm no closer to success.

We went through all the suggested solutions involving registry edits/deletions that I could find. We still come up with "Consistency validation for SQL Server registry keys" failure. There are a series of SQL Server keys (HKEY/LOCAL/Software) that we can see but we are prohibited from deleting.

I want to call Microsoft. Is there a special SQL Server phone #?

Migrating and adding tempdb files

Hi,

I'm in the process of migrating tempdb to a new, dedicated drive. In current state, the SQL Server instance has one tempdb data file. Per best practices, I would like to add three (3) additional tempdb data files while also migrating to the new drive.

My questions are:

  • If the allocated space is 100 GB and I wanted to add 4 tempdb files to that drive, should they all be of equal size (25 GB max)?
  • Do I add the tempdb files first (of 25 GB each) to the new drive and then migrate the existing tempdb file? Or, should it be reverse (first migrate then add)?

I'm fairly new to SQL Server maintenance and improvements and any and all help is appreciated!

SQL Server Service Packs (2008, 2008R2, 2012)

Hi all,

it appears that no one took care of installing Service Packs for our SQL Servers from WSUS and now i have to do it. What i have:

MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1

MS SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1,2,3

MS SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1,2

As you could see some of them a really old.

1. The fact that everything is running so far without any problems and complains bring the question: Do I have to install Service Packs?

2. Is it ok if I go directly to the latest Service Pack for each Server or i have to go the "entire road" installing one after another.

3. What is the best way to do the updates: Install all other security and critical updates, restart the server, then install the service pack and restart again the server.

Actually my knowledge for SQL Server and Updates for it are not so big that's why i want to apologies for the stupid questions. Thanks in advance

Running SQL Server 2012 Upgrade Advisor on a SQL 2008 R2 SSIS instance got the following errors all pointing to the data collector/MDW packages deployed under SSIS instance. first error is shown as critical the second one as warning. how to upgrade the dc packages in 2008 R2 SSIS instances to 2012, or the next 2 errors can be neglected?

SQL Server Integration Services PostUpgrade
Recompile third-party and custom components to work with SQL Server 2012. In SQL Server 2012, Integration Services has changed its application programming interfaces (APIs). To be compatible with these new APIs, all third-party and custom components may need to be recompiled. SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 components can use assembly binding redirection to continue working in SQL Server 2012. SQL Server 2005 components may require additional code changes to work with SQL Server 2012. Package Name: TSQLQuery_ServerName_MSSQL10_50_MSSQLSERVER_{GUID}_3_Collect

SQL Server Integration Services PostMigration
Update provider names in connection strings to be compatible with SQL Server 2012.In SQL Server 2012, connection strings require a different value for some provider names. The value for the SQL Server Native Client provider is now SQLNCLI11. The value for the OLE DB Provider for Analysis Services is now MSOLAP.5. To automatically update these provider names, use the Package Upgrade tool to upgrade SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008 packages. You can also manually update these names in Business Intelligence Development Studio.

I want to list all instances on a given server. Also I want to list all databases in a given server.

When I login through SSMS unless I specify the SQL Server instance I am unable to see all the databases.

Example:- SSMS->MSZIMBA01 ( I can see only system tables why is that ?)

SSMS->MSZIMBA01\DEV1 ( I can see the databases in dev 1)

Suppose it has 10 other dev instances how to list all of them . Thanks for your answer in advance.

Unable to connect to SQL server once joined to Windows domain

Hi,

I'm currently building some SQL Server 2014 Enterprise VM's in Azure (using powershell) using the latest SQL server image available.  My issue is that when the VM isn't joined to a Windows domain I am able to connect to SQL server through SSMS (using the local Windows account), however as soon as I join the VM to the Windows domain I am unable to connect to it due to security. If I try and use the previous credentials these also fail.

SQL is configured for Windows authentication only.

My question is, how do I configure SQL server to grant permissions to Windows accounts so that I can access SQL straight away?

I've tried executing the commands below, but they fail.

PS C:\Scripts> Invoke-SqlCmd -Query "CREATE LOGIN [marcus] FROM WINDOWS" -ServerInstance localhost
Invoke-SqlCmd : Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\Marcus'.
At line:1 char:1+ Invoke-SqlCmd -Query "CREATE LOGIN [marcus] FROM WINDOWS" -ServerInst ...+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ CategoryInfo : InvalidOperation: (:) [Invoke-Sqlcmd], SqlException+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : SqlExectionError,Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.PowerShell.GetScriptCommand

Invoke-SqlCmd :

+ Invoke-SqlCmd -Query "CREATE LOGIN [marcus] FROM WINDOWS" -ServerInst ...+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+ CategoryInfo : ParserError: (:) [Invoke-Sqlcmd], ParserException+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : ExecutionFailureException,Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.PowerShell.GetScriptCommand

PS SQLSERVER:\>

Checking the SQL error log shows the following:

2014-10-28 11:32:41.72 Logon       Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 5.
2014-10-28 11:32:41.72 Logon       Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\Marcus'. Reason: Could not find a login matching the name provided. [CLIENT: <local machine>]

Can anyone point me in the right direction? SQL Server isn't my speciality.
