Backing Up SQL Server 2014

$

My company has recently began using an SQL Server, located on the Head-Production computer, to store data for the factory. I am trying to learn more about the backup process for this, since the server holds basically all of our data.

1. What happens to the information if the computer itself dies

2. Is there a way to backup the information to another computer?

Thank you in advance

Monika

How we can assign a fixed amount of memory for a multiple instance in SQL 2014

Hi,

We have a SQL enterprise server 2014 with two installed instance.

First instance for SharePoint 2013 DBs and second instance  Dynamics AX 2012 R3 DBs.

The server has 32 GB of RAM, currently the process usage for first instance is 26 GB and second instance is 700 MB.

Which mean that SharePoint DBs in the first instance is consuming most of the RAM.

My question is there any way to assign a fixed RAM usage for a specific instance without affecting the other instance?

for example 16 GB only first instance and 16 GB to second instance.

regards,

I upgraded to SQL 2014 Developer. Now it takes 30 seconds to connect...

Howdy! I just upgraded to sql 2014 Dev edition. before the upgrade I connected using SSMS in about 2 seconds. Now it takes 30 and I'm confused as to why. Oddly enough, it doesn't matter whether I am connecting from my code  in .net or SSMS the delay is the same for both. to connect with SSMS I have to increase timeout to 30 seconds or the connection fails. I'd like to fix this somehow. Any ideas? Thank you!

users with sysadmin role can't access network drives

Hello

When I create logins for SQL Server 2012, something strange happens. When I assign the sysadmin role to a login, the login loses the access to the network drives (for example when creating or attaching databases). The only possible place is the c:drive of the computer that is running SQL Server.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks.

Hi there

I'm trying to upgrade from "SQL Server 2008 R2 x64 (64-bit) Express with Advanced Services" to "SQL Server 2008 R2 x64 (64-bit) Standard" edition via Maintenance->Edition Upgrade, but getting a "Edition upgrade failed. The selected SQL Server instance does not meet upgrade matrix requirements." error although the above upgrade path is included in the matrix onhttps://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393(v=sql.105).aspx. Any workarounds?

KB3045305 Causes problem with unique clustered index

After applying KB3045305 we started having problems with a PeopleSoft SQR (Structured Query Reporter) job that pulls data via distributed query from a table on our Finance system (another SQL Server).  Specifically, if I dropped the unique clustered index on this table it would work but if I re-applied it would not work. If I create the clustered index without making it unique it will work.  There are no duplicates in the table for the columns that make it unique.  The table is a not a custom table and is a delivered PeopleSoft table that has been there for years.  Anyone come across this?

Database Backup to Network Share on an Islion and Restore onto another offline Server

I need to backup a SQL Database on a SQL 2014 to network share on a EMC Islion (Windows NTFS) and then a day later restore the database onto a offline server .  How is this best achieve, TSQL Scripts seem to fail, making a local copy and then copy it up seems to work.  But there must be easier and inbuilt way to do it

1.Back the database to network share

2.Take that current backup and restore it on another server

SQL 2008 Standard - Downgrading a database

I have an instance of SQL 2008 Standard that is supporting Great Plains 9.0

We are trying to upgrade to Great Plains 2010, but the Great Plains 9.0 SP updater does not recognize SQL 2008 Standard as a valid version of SQL.

It's looking for SQL 2000 or SQL 2005.

So I need to downgrade our DYNAMICS and Company Database from SQL2008 to SQL2005, then apply the GP9 patch, then start my migration to GP2010.

However, I cannot get past the first step of downgrading my two databases.

Any suggestions?

MSSQL 2014 SSDTBI Installation Failure - INSTANCENAMELIST

I am unable to install SQL Server 2014 SSDTBI due to the following error:

"Unable to retrieve a public configuration object type Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.SetupExtension.SlpInputSettings for setting INSTANCENAMELIST.

Error result: -2057043961

Result facility code: 1380

Result error code: 7

Please review the summary.txt log for further details."

First, it does not write to any summary.txt file so there are no further details.

I have MSSQL 2012 Developer installed as a default instance and 2014 Developer as a naanksmed instance.

Visual Studio Pro 2012 and Pro 2013 are installed as well.

I haven't been able to find information on this error or how to get around it so for the moment, I'm stuck using SQL Server Data Tools for 2012 (and VS 2010).

Does anyone know how to fix this error?

Thanks!

Steve Lundahl

First, I should note that the same downloaded installation zip file was successfully installed on another computer.

Second, I found the log file and here it is from the point of the beginning of the error(s):

Unable to install SQL 2012 due to file 0gi5cdu2.chm

I have tried to install SQL 2012 Developer Edition twice without success due the following error:

Error reading from file D:\1033_ENU_LP\x64\setup\sql2008support\PFiles\SqlServr\100\Setup\Release\x64\Help\1033\0gi5cdu2.chm.  Verify that the file exists and that you can access it

I have verified the file by opening it.

I am wondering if anyone could offer some tips about how to remedy this?

Thanks in advance.

Why don't I see other SQL Instances on my LAN?

I have installed SQL Server more often that I'll like to remember. I've installed everything from enterprise to Express platforms, andSQL 2005 to SQL 2014 dev versions.

I've never had this problem until I installed SQL 2014 DEV on my development PC.

The problem I'm having is that when I try to connect to as SQL instance, they do not get listed when I try to browse for other instances on my local network. If I know the name of the host and instance, I can type it and it connects just fine. I just don't understand why I can't get them to list in the Browse for Servers (Network tab) dialog.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Temporary System folde left after SQL 2014 install

Hi there,

after upgrading my SQL Server 2012 instance to 2014 I now have a temporary system folder on C: with sub folders such as redist, resources and x64 e.t.c.  I assume this is not longer required.  However I can't remove it, despite being in the local administrators group.  If I try and take ownership of the folder structure an error occurs.

SQL 2014 SP1 Upgrade Issues (KB3058865)

We are attempting to test the SQL 2014 SP1 upgrade (KB3058865)  in our test environment, but are unable to complete the upgrade and start the instance. 2 of the 3 instances upgraded fine, the 3rd is failing with events 17063, 912 and 3417. This is similar to the previous SP1 patch that was pulled, but it's a different script failing. SSIS is installed with 1 catalog in the SSISDB.

Script level upgrade for database 'master' failed because upgrade step 'ISServer_upgrade.sql' encountered error 6528, state 1, severity 16.

I have brought the instance back online with the -T902 flag, and now the SSISDB is in single user mode. Since this is the latest correct SP1 install, and a different script failing, I'm not sure what the fix/workaround is in this situation.

The version of SQL Server instance Shared Component does not match the version expected by the SQL Server update. The installed SQL Server product version is 10.0.1600.22, and the expected SQL Server version is 10.50.1600.1

Hi there,

Windows Update (on Server 2012 R2) shows 'Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB2528583)' as available as an optional update. As shown by @@version, we have:

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP3) - 10.50.6220.0 (Intel X86)   Mar 19 2015 13:34:46   Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation  Express Edition on Windows NT 6.3 <X64> (Build 9600: ) (WOW64) (Hypervisor)

Obviously, we don't need the SP1 update, as we already have SP3 installed.

What I'm wondering is why the SP1 update is showing up in Windows Update at all. Any ideas?

SQL 2012 "TESTDBUPGRADE " is failing

I'm trying to test my sccm 2012 DB upgrade and in the log I getting a connection failure.

I built a new test server 2012 R2 running sql 2012. Same version as my sccm server.
I copied the DB over and atteched it to the test sql.
then I ran "setup.exe /TESTDBUPGRADE cm_sjc"

Now I see the following in the C:\ConfigMgrSetup.log

Enable TLS 1.2 for SQL SSL connections?

$

Does anyone know if running SQL 2008 R2 on Windows Server 2008 R2 if you can enable TLS 1.2 for connections between the SQL server and the SQL 2008 R2 ODBC client? I successfully enabled TLS 1.2 in IIS 7.5. But a network trace with the same system tweaks showed that the SQL connection was only being negotiated at TLS 1.0.

Enabling TLS 1.2 for IIS 7.5 can be found here:

http://derek858.blogspot.com/2010/06/enable-tls-12-aes-256-and-sha-256-in.html

The big difference between TLS 1.0 and 1.2 is the use of SHA-256 hashing instead of SHA1. NIST has recommended the phasing out of SHA1 in favor of SHA-256.
