removing instances from SQL Server
Hello, we would like to delete three instances from our SQL Server.
What is the best and safest way to do this - this is production, and using the Add/Remove Programs seems not necessarily the safest thing to do on a production box.
Is that the preferred method, or is there another method ?
Thank you,
John

Install SQL Server 2012 in Windows Server 2012 R2 template
As a part of standardize environment, we are creating templates in virtual environment and once there is requirements from projects, we will create Virtual machines from these templates and deliver them. In turn this will save lot of time in installation& configuration.
So in this template, we have installed SQL server 2012 and then created Virtual machines.
We saw a strange behavior, resource who installed SQL server has access to these server but despite of providing permission for Sys Admin, we are not able to login to SQL Management Studio & that particular resource is.
And then when we connected template, we found that newly created VM & template are referring to same instance of SQL server and users we added in VM are also displaying in template.
So it seems either pre installation of SQL server is not possible in template OR we are missing something.
If pre install is not possible then can you please suggest approach to fulfill this requirement. One can be using PowerShell script to install SQL server after VM is created.
Thanks for your help in advance.

SQL 2012 Setup issues - hexadecimal value 0x00 is an invalid character
Hi all,
Am having no luck installing 2012 RC0. The error I am getting is consistent no matter what I have tried. The problem always occurs right after picking any option that requires the installer look inside my system to figure out what's there and what has to be done next e.g. Installation > New SQL Server Standalone.... Somewhere within that common inspection / configuration routine a character comes up that my system falls over on.
TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.
------------------------------
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:
'.', hexadecimal value 0x00, is an invalid character. Line 1, position 817.
Error code 0x84B10001.

System Details
- OS: Win 7 Ultimate SP1
- No Denali beta bits on the machine (never were)
- .NET 3.5 SP1 is installed (.NET 4.0 also installed)
- Installed extra patch for .NET 3.5 SP1 for Win 7 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=958488
- Removed all SQL 2008 R2 bits (just to be sure)
- Reinstalled Visual Studio 2010 SP1
Other stuff I've done:
- Downloaded the 2012 bits twice
- Extracted contents of the ISO into a physical directory and executed from there.
Same error every time.
Just to be sure it was a 2012 thing I tried running the SQL 2008 R2 installer and it ran past the point where I get the 2012 error without a hitch.
There is something in the 2012 installer that requires bits my system just does not have to handle that hex character as it should. All I can think of is that there is some form of hotfix / QFE that I have not applied and that is what is causing the hexadecimal value error I keep getting.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Nick

"Setup is unable to create database on SQL Server instance" error in new database installation
I have a new SCOM 2012 R2 installation on a Windows Server & SQL Sp1 2012 cluster. I'm logged in with the SCOM account and at the "Configure the operational database window" I add the new instance, specify the new database name, and upon clicking Next I get the following error:
Setup is unable to create database on SQL server instance ''. Please make sure the current user has permissions to create database on the SQL Server instance specified.
According to the SQL DBA the account has been granted SA rights on the instance which supposedly has login permission into the sql server including owner for master database. In spite of this I continue to get this error.
I've made sure that the SCOM account being used to create the database has local admin access on the SCOm and both sql nodes.
In addition I've confirmed my ability to access the SQL shares via UNC from the SCOM server:
\\sqlserver\data
\\sqlserver\log
I've also gone so far as to try installing the database using the IP address of the server. Per the firewall guy there are no rules restricting access to any of the nodes.
All servers are on the same domain.
All of the above produces the same error. So at this point I'm reaching out for assistance of a resolution to this annoying issue which is either a SQL issue or something I'm overlooking. Therefore any assistance is appreciated.
How to restore SQL Server 2014 database from .MDF and .LDF files after uninstall/reinstall of SQL Server
I was forced to reset my computer after installing Windows 10. (Kept files--reloaded apps.)
Have reinstalled SQL Server 2014.
I see that my database files from previous installation are in folder C:\Windows.old\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQL2014DEV\MSSQL\DATA.
But I can't figure out how to use the .MDF and .LDF files in this folder to recreate the databases in the new server instance.
Thanks!

Evaluation Period has expired - SQL server Management Studio
I am new to this environment and I have an issue with SQL studio management – it says
“Evaluation period has expired. For information on how to upgrade your evaluation software please go tohttp://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy”.
The questions I have are :
1. How do I know what version of SQL I am running ?(since I cant go through studio management)
2. I can see sql server 2008 r2 on the program files- does that mean SQL management studio is 2008 R2?
3. How do I upgrade to a proper version ? – Is it through “installation center “ on program files ?
4. Will the upgrade stop any SQL services?
Many thanks guys – Im fairly new to sql troubleshooting – I have only done direct installations in the past.
Regards, MassonTech

Evaluation Period has Expired
I have been using SQL 2008R2 since Febuary, starting today when I try running SQL Server Management Studio I get an error Evaluation period has expired. I believe the technet version of SQL will not expire. Not sure what is going on. When I run the Upgrade The edition of SQL under server instance name, edition is says Evaluation. My question is if I run this wizard all the way through, does it stop the SQL services? Is this the right approach to solving my issue. It seem the DB's are ok. I can access them via a workstation.
Thanks
Chad
"Evaluation period has expired."... what? (SSMS problem)
I have problem with SQL Management Studio 2008. I used for few months Evaluation Edition (before I also used beta and CTP). I do upgrade to full edition (using installer with built-in key from MSDNAA) and everything looks good. But two days ago I got information from SQL Management Studio, that "Evaluation period has expired.". I tried reinstalling all things few times, but with no result. All parts install in normal, full mode. Only SSMS install in evaluation mode. What can I do with it?
PS The same installer on another machine, clean installation and SSMS is not in Evaluation Mode. On my computer I can change date back and SSMS is working, but this is really not a solution.
Best regards,

How get DataBase Backup in sql 2008 when evluation edition is expire
it's me.
Evaluation period has expired for SQL Server 2012,Need to upgrade.
Hi,
I have SQL Server 2012 installed in my virtual machine for a period of time. Now when i try to access the SSMS its giving an error as Evaluation Period has been expired, and giving a link to buy the software. But I already do have the keys and when I tried to give the keys in
Maintenance>>Edition Upgrade
Than I have followed as per instruction at the end of the upgrade formality window, the Final"Upgrade" button is disabled because of that i couldnt upgrade my SQL Server.
Can anyone help me out here,if there are any prerequisites to be performed before upgrading.
I wanna highlight a point that I dont have a setup file now for SQL Server2012. I am upgrading it feom Configuration Tools as
Start>>All Programs>>Microsoft SQL Server 2012>>Configuration Tools>>SQL Server Installation Centre(64 bit)
is it the right way I am going or there is something I missed,Please give your suggestion and solution for how to make my SQL Server2012 up and running.
Thank you in Advance.
