Can I install Microsoft SQL Server 2017 and Microsoft SQL Server 2019 side by side?
SQL Server and Active Directory Trusts
Hello,
In order to stop using SQL users on our environment we decided to use Windows users. So this is the full picture.
We have AD A and AD B. AD B has the databases (SQL Server 2016) and trusts users from AD A to login.
I have set up windows logins from AD A in the databases in AD B.
The problem is the connectivity is really slow. I do not think this is a bottleneck issue but rather some bad configuration.
To see what happens on the server side I set up an audit and asked a user to login with windows authentication.
I noticed that there are 3-4 login failed whenever he logs in. Also these appear when he tries to do something.
Any tips on improving performance?
Thank you,
Bogdan
Is it wrong to call a Windows Server Failover cluster that hosts a 4 node SQL Server Availability group enabled configuration as containing a SQL CLuster?
Hi,
Is it wrong to call a Windows Server Fail-over cluster that hosts a 4 node SQL Server Availability group enabled configuration as containing a SQL Cluster?
This may seem like a very trite question - however a senior SQL DBA at work said that there was no SQL cluster in a design which was for a Windows Server Fail-over cluster with 4 SQL Server AG nodes...
I want to know the official Microsoft position on this - is it true - yes or no - to say that there is a SQL cluster in a design that uses WSFC/hosting a 4 node SQL server Availability group?
OR perhaps the idea of a SQL cluster is not in this design - Ideally I'd like to know the official Microsoft position on this...I think this DBA is wrong but they are very senior and before i tell them - if ever - i want to be 100% sure...

LocalDB will not install by itself unless installed as part of SQL Server Express
On a brand new (fresh) Windows 10 Pro 1909 system, I have run into problems installing theLocalDB component of SQL Server 2019 Express Edition.
I first acquired the MSI install file by running the GUI for the SQL Server 2019 Express Edition installer and selecting the "Download Media" option:
Then I chose the LocalDB option:
The above downloaded a 53 MB file: sqllocaldb.msi.
I ran the file from an elevated CMD window. The install failed with the error message:"Service 'SQL Server VSS Writer' (SQLWriter) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient priviliges to start system services."
The indication about lack of privilige is misleading, as I used an admin account to do the install, as mentioned.
Per online suggestions, I also tried modifying the "Log On" tab for the service in question and set "Local System account -> Allow service to interact with the desktop" box, which did not help.
The only way I was able to proceed with the install was to use the Custom option in the GUI and check both Instance Features -> Database Engine Services and Shared Features -> LocalDB in the Feature Selection pane.
However, this results in the installation of two instances, as follows:
This kind of defeats my purpose: I want the compact LocalDB version only, not accompanied by the full Express edition.
In any case, I don't understand why, during the install, LocalDB shows a dependence on the VSS Writer service?
I would appreciate learning more about the whole thing. Maybe my understanding of LocalDB, that it's a simple, SQLite-like db, is incorrect.
Thanks.
Isolation turn off issue after 2016 sp2 patching done
Recently we have applied service pack 2 for 2016(Microsoft SQL Server 2016 (SP2-CU10) (KB4524334) - 13.0.5492.2 (X64) )Developer Edition (64-bit) on Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter 6.3 <X64> (Build 9600: ) (Hypervisor)
Post patching we are unable to turn off Snapshot_isloation , it's executing for hours but value is not change on to off.
Query: ALTER DATABASE somedatabase SET ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION OFF
we noticed something new , if we created any new database isolation level showing default as True , unable to create database with False option.

SQL 2019 Std Service Terminates after startup
Installed SQL Server 2019 yesterday and it was running fine. Rebooted the server this morning and the SQL Service Terminates. In the logs it seems like it is coming up successfully. I see DB's being initiated then I get a Event ID 7024 Service Control Manager. Error states that it cannot find an error description for this event but it does show further down in the description
The following information was included in the event:
SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)
%%5161
I am using a AD UserID for starting the services. I tried adding it to the local admin group but that did not help. I also tried starting the service as the localsystem. Same problem occurs. Any help is appreciated.

SQL Availability Group question to do with pinging listener when primary is shut down
Hi,
I have a 4 node SQL AG config where the primary should auto-fail to the secondary via synchronous data commit IF the primary goes offline.
So during testing we turned off the primary but the IP for the listener can't be pinged...i expect a ping if the primary is off as the secondary should respond but it does not...
Can anyone advise how to trouble shoot this? There is no error in event viewer - where else can we look for some info on this please?
I'm a new SQL DBA so not sure which SQL error logs if any would have this info?
Please help! Thanks!
Unable to install SQL Server Error -2068119551
Hello,
I've been trying all day to install a SQL Server Database Engine. I've tried 2017 Express, 2019 Express and also 2019 Dev.
No luck! I currently use SSMS/VS on the PC, but need a local SQL Server for some ASP.NET playing.
On each install, or failed install, I get:
Unable to install SQL Server (setup.exe)
Exit Code (Decimal) -2068119551 Error description: Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation.
I'm using a local admin account. I've tried to run as Admin. But nothing is working.
Help! And thank you.

The User Data directory in the registry is not valid ... Error code: 0x851A0043
I've installed SQL Server 2014 on a new Windows 7 computer. I am trying to apply the SQLServer2014-KB3158271-x64.exe update which is the "3158271 Cumulative update package 14 (CU14) for SQL Server 2014." I am getting the error shown in the issue title: "The User Data directory in the registry is not valid ... Error code: 0x851A0043." I've check the registry setting for DefaultData and it has the correct path: E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.MEMBERSLINK\MSSQL\DATA. The path exists, and has the database files. I've done this successfully before. The only difference this time is that E: is a network drive.
Help sorting this out would be greatly appreciated.
Installing SQL Server 2012 cluster on Server 2012 Core
I am looking for some examples of a configuration.ini file for a sql cluster install on windows 2012 Core and so far there is nothing. Any one have a sample I can have a look at to use a basis for building my own. Other than trying to get the server team to build me a test cluster with GUI so I can do an install and take the config file from there.... that could take them a while.
Thanks
Ryan
SQL Server ent ed installation on Windows Server core Failover cluster
Hi, I am chasing any information to assist in doing a SQL Server 2019 enterprise edition install on a 2 node Windows Server core.
The process to install clustered sql server on normal windows server cluster is understood and done many times. In this case it is installation on Server core.
Information on MS sites for pre-reqs etc do not provide any detailed information of a sql cluster install on server core so I am not even sure its supported?
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Why do I need DAC if I am able to connect to the server via sqlcmd?
DAC attracted my attention at the moment when I was unable to connect to the SQL Server using a traditional way (the reason was deleting logon trigger). I made some searches on the web and it turned out that the only way to access the Server was to use DAC connection which unfortunately was turned off by default. However, I was able to overcome the problem (I removed trigger) using just sqlcmd.
My question is if I can connect to the SQL Server just using sqlcmd, what is the purpose of DAC then?
