Marking your questions as Answered

 Hi All,

I want to make a pitch to have folks mark their questions as Answered once you've received an Answer that solves your problem. Everyone who posts a question has the ability to mark that question as Answered by clicking the Answered button for the Post that best answers the question.

There are a couple good reasons to do this:

  • Our search engine weights Answered questions more highly. By marking Answers you increase the chances that others searching this forum will find the answer directly rather than re-posting the question.
  • You give credit to the hard working folks who answer your questions. This is peer to peer support, so recognition is our only reward. (Check out the Top Answerers in 30 Days chart at the bottom of the thread list to see who is currently answering questions.)
  • You help me track the health of this forum. I get mail every day telling me how many unanswered questions are in this forum and I work to keep those numbers at a certain level. By marking Answers, I get a more accurate understanding.

I apreciate everyone's participation in the SQL Setup & Upgrade Forum whether you're asking questions, answering question or just reading along. Marking Answers is one way we can all work together to make the forum a little better.

Regards,

Sam Lester

SBS 2011, SQL Server 2008 R2 SP will not install, always PendingFileRenameOperations?

$

We have a client with an SBS 2011 Server. All updates have ran ok except for SQL Server R2 Service Pack 1.

This continues to fail, and afteer investigation we came accross the issue with the following registry jey PendingFileRenameOperations located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

Even if all updates are done (except the failed SQL update), there is always a pending file rename in the registry and associated file in the temo folder.

Even after renaming the registry key to PendingFileRenameOperations2 and rebooting the server, the key PendingFileRenameOperations comes back. We have booted the server 4 times in one evening without changing the above registry entry and still it keeps coming up with more and more PendingfileRenameOperations

It seems to be never ending and the files in question always seem to be the same size.

Has anyone else come accross the problem, I have seen similar posts/resolutions on the internet all resolving around the registry entry but this does not seem to be working.

Any help appreciated.

Regards

Dave

SSMS 10.50.1600.1 & ApphangB1

After a few minutes of working with SSMS 10.50.1600.1 on the console of a cluster node, against a clustered instance,  it freezes and returns the error message below.

I ruled out a couple of organic mistakes I might have made, and read, on line, that the likelist solution was to repair ,NET 3.51.  And it worked, for a while:  the the problem returned.

A reboot will reactivate the SSMS; but it eventually hangs.

A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows.

SQL Server 2008 R2 product key change on production server

$

Hello,

We have a one production server which has Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) -  Standard Edition (64-bit). This SQL server 2008 R2 is already activated with valid product key and is good. When this server was shipped from DELL it came up with SQL Server 2012 media but we support SQL Server 2008 R2 standard so we used one of our own license copy to activate this server. Now we traded this 2012 media with Microsoft and they have sent us back SQL Server 2008 R2 standard edition media with product key and now we want to use this new product key.

How can we change this product key on production server? Will it affect the server in case of changing the product key fails? Will the instance get corrupt?

I have one solution but I am not sure of.

By using the configuration manager, run the installation wizard, maintenance --> edition upgrade--> and there we can enter new product key.

But will this go smoothly? as we are not upgrading the edition of sql server. It has SQL Server 2008 R2 standard edition now and new one is also same one. Just product key will be different.

Your help is much appreciated.

Thank you.

Upgrading SQL 2005 x64 Enterprise to 2008 R2 Enterprise

$

Hi all.

I'm having a problem running an in place upgrade of SQL Server 2005 x64 Enterprise to 2008 R2 Enterprise.

When I run setup.exe and choose "upgrade", I am able to upgrade all components apart from the database engine. I am not given the option to select an instance prior to this. I have ensured that "x64" is selected from the bottom "options" tab on the initial setup screen. My current installed version of SQL is definitely 2005 x64 Enterprise, I have checked this with @@version and in the general properties of the Management Studio.

The strange thing is that if I select "x86" from the bottoms tab in SQL setup I AM able to select the 2005 instance, which lists the database engine as something it will upgrade in the next screen. Obviously I have not proceeded with the upgrade as I feel something is wrong somewhere.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get the x64 install to detect the 2005 instance and upgrade the database engine?

Thanks

SQL Server 2012 Developer Installation Failure - Cannot find one or more components. Please reinstall the app

I am trying to install SQL Server 2012 Developer on a PC running Windows 8  Enterprise x64.

During the installation it showed that all prerequisites were met.

The installation proceeds about 2/3 of the through then displays a message box indicating

"Cannot find one or more components.  Please reinstall the applications.

The title bar for the message box indicates SQL Server Management Studio.

I tired completely uninstall and reinstalling.

I even tried unchecking the SP1 option during the installation but it made not differe4nce whatsoever.

I am installing a default instance and there is no upgrade involved.

Visual Studio 2010 and Visual Studio 2012 are also installed along with their latest service pack.

Windows 8 Enterprise also has all of the patches installed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been installing SQL Server Developer since 2000 and this is the first time where I have failed to get it installed.

Can't uninstall SQL 2012 ? Error Code 0x84b10001

I keep getting this error when I try to install, repair or uninstall SQL 2012 which won't run because of another error? Here is the error..

sql server has encontoiured the following error:

Could not load file or assembly \\\ C:/program files/microsoft/sql server/ 110 blah blah blah huge path / Microsoft.SQLserver.Configuration.Setup.Extension.DLL  Error Code 0x84b10001

I'm also not able to open SQL server management studio 2012. I have Management Studio 2008, but I need 2012 for my remote host which is using 2012. So, when I try with 2008 to open my db at the host, I get an error that I need 2012. This is driving me nuts..

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate with 8gig of ram, solid state drive, on a lap top, latest updates, etc,. I also have VIsual Studio 2012 Pro, Webmatrix, and everything else works fine. Just this one damn SQL server Management studio that I need for it's visual tools to do relationships with, etc, and it doesn't work. Any help would be most appreciated.. I'm going to try to update SQL server again and the computer in general to see if that helps..

A search gives me a lot of stuff about 2008 sql, but nothing with the same error, so I'm afraid to try those solutions since they don't seem to be the same problem as I'm having!

We're setting up 3-servers, running on WINDOWS SERVER 2012. 2 servers clustered and the 3rd will act as a storage.
we've already setup everything. The problem is whenever we install the SQL12 when its almost about to finish this error message pops up:
"THE FOLLOWING ERROR HAS OCCURRED WAIT ON THE DATABASE ENGINE RECOVERY HANDLE FAILED."
We've tried several times to reset-up everything. But we still end up with the same error message. - Could you please help.

Error code 0x84B20001"

Please help me to understand what I can do to overcome this error message?

SQL Server will not start on VMWare (5.1) hosted 2012 (sp1) server.

I built a brand new Standard Server 2012 SP1 virtual machine in a VMWare 5.1 clustered environment.  No problems with the server itself.  No errors, no issues.  I patched to SP1 with all the latest KB's.  I start the installation of SQL 2012 Standard.  Install goes fine.  I set up domain service accounts to run the server and agent on, set them up as administrators on the box.  At the end of the installation it can't start the services.  SQL Server Agent wont start.  SQL Server wont start...  I am logged in as a domain admin.

There is NOTHING else installed on this server, not even antivirus.

"Windows could not start the SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service on local computer.  Error 5: Access is denied."

I found a posting about someone having a similar issue Here.   There was something about permissions of the guest in VMWare.  The fix for them was "changing all of the sql server services to log on as local system" which is NOT an option for me.  I did change permissions on the SQL install folder, and that didn't help.

So I wrapped up the installation....

Tried to start the service and got the above error.  Here is the event: (Sanitized for your protection)
