How can I make SQL2005 Analysis Services and SQL2008R2 Analysis Services work at the same time on the same Windows?

$

Would you be so kind so as to tell me how I can make SQL Server2005 and SQL Server 2008R2 work at the same time?

I am mainly interested in Analysis Services work from both versions. I have installed SQL Server 2005-Standard Edition on WinXPx86, I have applied SP4, I have restarted the computer, I have installed SQL Server 2008R2 Standard EditionX86, I have applied SP2.

After I have installed SQL Server 2008R2, the Analysis 2008r2 services works, but not SQL Services2005.

I have applied SP2 again for SQL 2005 and now Analysis 2005 works, but the Analysis 2008R2 service cannot be started and neither can be started the ReportingServices2008R2.

How can I make both versions of SQL(Analysis Services) work at the same time on the same Windows?

I am applying SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 CU8 on one of my cluster server and I am getting below error. The same error is appearing on all SQL Server 2008 R2 Cluster Server.

The file share for filesteam is <a href="file://\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\RsFx0152\\SQL1">\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\RsFx0152\<localmachine>\SQL1 under Cluster Fileshare

2012-11-18 18:57:31 SQLEngine: --ShareMgmt: Error removing current machine from the Filestream File Share resource's possible owners. Error: The private properties for resource 'SQL Server FILESTREAM share (SQL1)' could not be saved.  Error: The network path was not found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070035)

Any Idea if someone has faced the same kind of issue ?

Upgrading SQL Server Express 2005 to Standard 2005 on Amazon Web Services

Although the procedure for upgrading from 2005 Express to 2005 Standard (which I own) seems straight-forward, when the database in question resides on an AWS virtual server, the process seems to get much more complicated.

Has anyone done this?  Is it even possible?

Thanks

84B20001 - Failed to install security update for SQL Server 2012 on Windows 8 (64-bit)

I am having problem to install security update for SQL Server 2012 (64-bit) on Windows 8 (64-bit) OS.

I got error code 84B20001 while installation. After further investigation, in event log I found message as below-

"FileMgr::StartLogFiles: Operating system error 2(The system cannot find the file specified) occurred while creating or opening file 'e:\sql10_main_t\sql\mkmastr\databases\objfre\i386\MSDBLog.ldf' Diagnose and correct the operating system error, and retry the operation."

  1. I have not installed SQL Server on this location, I gone through recommended steps for installation.
  2. I have tried all the possible solutions found on web (including RebuildDatabase also), but nothing seemed to work.
  3. I have checked all permissions to access the database and those are all enough.
  4. I have more than 100GB space on C:, D: and E: drive, hence less disk space issue shouldn't come.
  5. Also, I failed to start SQL Express service from service manager (SQL Server Configuration).
  6. Under "%systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\" directory in the log file, I found message as below-

"AutomaticUpdates Failure Content Install Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Security Update for SQL Server 2012 RTM (KB27164442)."

Appreciate the help.

Thanks,

If I am going to use the Developer Edition of SQL Server in my not production environments, I need to have a licence for every Developer that is going to use the Instances created with the Developer Edition. But do I also need licences for business people who are using application other then SQL Server tools? And do I need licences for Service Accounts that an application can use to connect to the database?

Thanks,

Sql Server Unattended install vs Cloning Hyper-V Guest

$

We want to create 4 "identical" Sql servers (standardization). Identical in their drive layout as well as where the sql bits reside, where tempdb resides, where the mdf and ldf files reside. We can either create 4 Windows boxes and run a sql unattended installation script on each  or simply clone a Hyper Guest with Sql already installed.

I think the cloning approach is better. Do you agree with that?

At the begining of running setup before getting to screen to install engine after a long time an error reports nvntnrjq.dll is not available on e:( dvd).

I have downloaded both from Technet.

I woder if it related to corruption of downloading. I am using the file transefer of Technet.

I am also downloading again, which takes 2 hours, but meanwhile I appreciate if you let me know there is other issue(s) i should look into.

I noticed someone eles on blogs.micorsoft had the same issue and MS has asked for error log.

2012 setup bombs after disk swap - how to recover?

$
0
0

I am updating SQL 2008R2 Dev edition on a Win 7 Pro SP1 machine.  Setup is running from a disk in the optical drive.  During the install phase (about 1/3 based on the progress bar), setup said it needed the VS 2010 Premium -EN disk.  I removed the SQL Server disk and loaded the VS 2010 disk.  Setup copied some files.  Then, I started getting more messages:

  1. Setup failed to launch .NET Framework 4,0.  error code 2
  2. Required package F:\long path\SQLWriter.msi doesn't exist.  error 0x84B20001
  3. SQL Server has stopped working.  Sending report to MS...

It seems that setup forgot to ask for the SQL Server setup disk!  Unbelievable.  Hopefully this will make its way to the team and it can be corrected.

Meanwhilst, I am curious about the best path to recover.  SQL Server 2008R2 seems to be intact.  Can I simply try running the install again (this time mounting an ISO of the VS 2010 disk!).  Should I uninstall SQL Server 2008R2, wipe out all of the related folders and registry entries and do a fresh 2012 install?  The first computer I updated (with what I thought was an identical configuration) did not need the VS disk and setup was a smooth experience.

Best,

Scott

Start 2012 Books Online from command line or icon?

I want to copy the icon for 'SQL Server Documentation' to the quick launch area in the taskbar so I do not have to go through several levels of folders every time I start it.  I could do this on all prior versions, but for some reason I can't on 2012.

Is there a command-line command I can use to start the Microsoft Help Viewer with the right catalog so I can create an icon to copy to the task bar?

Stumped - how do you install SQL Profiler?

$
0
0
Hi everyone

I've just installed SQL 2008 Express (I installed the express edition because I need support for user instances).

Now I want to install SQL Profiler. I understand it doesn't come with SQL Express, so I've got the DVD for SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition. The problem is that whether I choose "New SQL Installation" or "Add Features to Existing Installation", there's no option to install SQL Profiler. The only client tools that appear in the installation screen are:
- Business Intelligence Development Studio
- Management Tools - Basic
- SQL Client Connectivity SDK.

SQL Profiler's got to be in there somewhere... tearing my hair out!

Thanks

Joe
