SQL2012 on WINSRV2012 - Can only see C drive

$

During the install of SQL 2012 Std on WinSrv 2012 Std, at the "Database Engine Confirguration" step, on the "Data Directories" tab I AM able to see/browse to all local disks.

After installation, in the "Database default locations" of the Server Properties I am only able to see C: drive, and the same when trying to attach a database. Machine is in a domain, install and config being done using the Domain Admin acc.

So, if I do NOT change the defaults during install, I cannot select any other disk afterwards.

If I DO change the defaults (to any other drive), trying to create a new database results in a 5133 error.

IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS setting giving problems

Hello Everyone,

I have some trouble with a preconfigured .ini file, regarding the setting: IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS.

On some systems that i install SQL Server, it specifically wants this setting, and in others it dont. I work for a development house, and we install on different platforms, and would like our .ini file, to work on all of the platforms, without technicians first having to edit the file.

We install SQL Express, Developers Edition and the full edition. Is there any docs i can read to find out more about thisIACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS setting, or can someone please give advise?

Thanks!

Connection Error from Visual Studio 2012 to SQL Server 2012 Express

Hi Group,

I'm facing the same problem than Genn T. Kitchen does.

I'm using the the Server Explorer within Visual Studio 2012 in order to create a data conection to a SQL-Server 2012 Express database.
I'm using Windows Authentification - Click Test Connection and the result is "Test connection succeeded". Once I click the OK-button A window pops up from Server Explorer  with this Error-Message

"Unable to add data connection. Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Sdk.Sfc, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91' or on of its dependencies. Das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden.

I downloaded SQL Server 2012 Express in a bundle with Visual Studio 2012 from Microsoft.

Does anybody has an idea?

Thanks in advance.

We installed 2008 Standard SP2 and as part of the post install I went in, changed the sa password to our standard and logged out and back in. When I try to create a new maintenance plan, I go into Manage Connections and enter the sa password no problem. When I try to save the new plan I get the error: The SaveToSQLServer method had encountered OLE DB error code 0x80040E4D (Ligin failed for user 'sa'). The SQL statement that was issued has failed.

Any help gratefully accepted.

Upgrading 2008 Standard Edition to SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition

Hi All,

We need upgrade our SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition to SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition, i have gone through couple of links as below.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144267(v=sql.100).aspx

Wanted to know how do we upgrade from 2008 Standard Edition to SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition, becuase here we have upgrade the Edition and also version.

Below link says we can upgrade from SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition to SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393(v=sql.100).aspx

so my question is Do we have to upgrade SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition to SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition Edition and then Upgrade the Edition to R2 Enterprise Edition

or

else we can directly Upgrade from SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition to SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition.

please guide me and also let me know with Pre and post Upgrade Checklist

Spawned SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 installation freezes during ExecuteStandardTimingsWorkflow

$

We have an InstallShield installation package that spawns an installation of MS SQL Server 2008 R2, depending on what components the user selects to install. This has worked fine, but now we need to support Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8, so we want to distribute SP2 of SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition instead of the original SP1. The only difference made to the installation package is to replace the redistributable of SQL Server R2 Express Edition SP1 with SP2. If the SP1 version is used Windows 2012 and Windows 8 will popup a message saying that there is compatibility issues with that version of SQL Server.

When the installation package use SQL SP2 the SQL Server installation starts, extracts files etc and and begins the installation, but then freezes at the step ExecuteStandardTimingsWorkflow displayed in the installer UI.
There is no significant CPU usage and no increase in memory by any process like msiexec or similar and there is no error message displayed.
It is not possible to cancel the installation either (cancel button disabled). Reviewing the SQL Server log files shows the following lines in the Detail_ComponentUpdate log

2012-08-23 08:33:06 Slp: Sco: Attempting to open registry subkey SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0
2012-08-23 08:33:06 Slp: Sco: Waiting for service 'msiserver' to accept the stop request.
2012-08-23 08:33:06 Slp: Sco: Returning service status Running
2012-08-23 08:33:11 Slp: Sco: Returning service status Running
2012-08-23 08:33:16 Slp: Sco: Returning service status Running <- repeated indefintely until the installer is killed in task manager

When using SP1 the same log files says the following

2012-08-23 11:00:57 Slp: Sco: Attempting to open registry subkey SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0
2012-08-23 11:00:57 Slp: Sco: Waiting for service 'msiserver' to accept the stop request.
2012-08-23 11:00:57 Slp: Sco: Returning service status Stopped

The problems appears to be that the installer cannot shutdown the msiserver service and just loops indefinitely.
The following conditions apply to all tested machines which is Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 RC, Windows Server 2008 R2

Machine is clean, no existing versions of SQL Server exists prior to installation. All security updates etc. applied.

Logged in user is local administrator.

Installation is successful if the SP1 version of SQL Server 2012 is used instead of the SP2 version

The SP2 version can be installed successfully from the command prompt (run as administrator). In this case I use the following command

line (replaced password with ****):
SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe /ACTION=install /INSTANCENAME=PRODACAPO /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /HIDECONSOLE /QUIETSIMPLE /SECURITYMODE=SQL /SAPWD=**** /SQLSVCACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM"

Display language is US English and SQL Server package is US English. Input/keyboard language is Swedish.

Windows Installer service cannot be shutdown from services as Stop and Restart options are disabled.

No summary.txt file is created when the installation freezes

Are there any changes in the behavior of the installation package from SP1 to SP2? Since SP1 works it seems that InstallShield cannot be blamed for this problem? However, installing from the command prompt works which means that the problem seem to lie in with how the SQL installation is spawned from InstallShield. Currently this problem is preventing us from supporting Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 properly.
If you need any log files or other info I can provide that promptly.

SQL Server patching - Should I update our builds to latest SP? or latest SP + latest CU?

Micosoft Cumulative Updates come with the following recommendation:

“A supported cumulative update package is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problems that are described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing these specific problems. This cumulative update package may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by any of these problems, we recommend that you wait for the next SQL Server 2008 R2 service pack that contains the hotfixes in this cumulative update package.”

However, I've talked with a number of SQL Server DBAs from a variety of organizations and many seem to patch their servers right to the lastest CU available regardless of whether their servers have experienced any of the problems that the hotfixes in the CUs are suppose to fix.
What should we be doing?  Only applying CUs if we specifically need them (like Microsoft recommends)?  Or applying the latest CU available?  What do most SQL Server DBAs do?

SQL 2005 service pack 4

Hi!

We are currently running SQL Server 2005, and are still on SP2 and I just learned that SP4 exists for SQL 2005. I just wanted to ask if somebody else did an upgrade from SP2 to SP4 and if there were any problems in the update process or if it all went smoothly. I need to ease myself SQL 2005 Service Pack 4 are there any reasons NOT to upgrade from 2 to 4 directly or are there any user examples out there where someone got a real benefit from upgrading to SP4, because we have to make a case to Management and the network to prove it is worth it.

Thank you!

SQL Server 2008 R2 Encrypted Connection

$

Hi,

I'm trying to enable encrypted connection to the SQL Server 2008 R2. I have created a certificate from the Web Server template using the domain CA, used the local machine name as the Subject (CN=vm1.contoso.local) and used two alternative names (DNS=vm1.contoso.com and DNS=contosovm1.cloudapp.net). This certificate was shown in the SQL Server Configuration Manager and afer restarting the SQL Server service I was able to connect to the server using encrypted connection only using the vm1.contoso.local address.

When I try to connect to the server using other names (vm1.contoso.com or contosovm1.cloudapp.net) I will get this error in the SQL Management Studio:

A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The certificate's CN name does not match the passed value.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -2146762481)

vm1.contoso.com is a CNAME for contosovm1.cloudapp.net

I was configuring the server and certificates using these articles and I double checked that the certificate meets requirements mentions in the Technet article:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189067(SQL.100).aspx

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj823131.aspx

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqljourney/archive/2012/03/16/implementing-ssl-encryption-for-sql-server-in-a-dns-forwarding-environment.aspx

How can I troubleshoot this issue and get the encrypted connection working in SQL Server using certificate with SAN attributes?
