We are installing this in order for SalesLogix to run.

When running SQL2008 R2 setup, we get this specific error: An error occurred during the installation of assembly "Microsoft.VC80.CRT,publickeytoken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b"version 8.0.50727.4027,type=win32

Cannot install SQL Express 2012 on Windows Server Essentials 2012

I've tried this a few times. Uninstalling between tries. Rebooting too. Logged on as an admin on the machine and run the installation file as administrator.

64 bit Windows Essentials 2012. Installing 64 bit SQL Server Express 2012.

This error is in one of the log files. There is no "E" drive. I'm installing SQL on the C drive in the default directory.

FCB::Open failed: Could not open file e:\sql11_main_t.obj.x86release\sql\mkmastr\databases\objfre\i386\MSDBData.mdf for file number 1.  OS error: 21(The device is not ready.).

I've installed various editions and versions of SQL Server on many client machines over the last dozen years. Never on Windows Server Essentials though. I've never run into something like this before. I'm really not sure what to look for here.

I'm not sure that's the right log file though. There doesn't appear to be an event viewer in Windows Essentials. I'm not sure where to find the right log to tell me exactly what's going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Keith

Can't start up PolyBase services

Hello, I've been trying to create an Azure VM with SQL Server 2016 RC3 on it. Of course, the Polybase feature isn't installed as default when the VM starts up, so I went to the SQL Server installer on C:\ wanting to add the PB feature. When I choose the option that I'd like a stand-alone PB instance, the installation goes just fine. But when I select the option to use the server as part of a scale-out group (my intention was to first create the head node), after setting "NT Authority\NETWORK SERVICE" as service account for the PB services, I get:

The specified account for SQL Server PolyBase Engine (same error for PolyBase Data Movement) service is not allowed because you have chosen to either install this instance as part of a SQL Server failover cluster or to use this instance as a part of PolyBase scale-out group. To continue, provide a domain account for the SQL Server PolyBase Engine service.

Any help is appreciated.

Best regards

How do I change location from "C:\Users\MSSQLSERVER" to "D:\Users\MSSQLSERVER"

Hey everyone. My C: drive is a 128GB SSD and almost out of space. WinDirStat revealed that C:\Users\MSSQLSERVER is occupying almost half of that space. I would like to move that path to be D:\Users\MSSQLSERVER instead. My D: drive is a 1TB drive. Does someone know how I can do that? Thanks.

Technet Evaluation Center: SQL Server 2016 ISO file is corrupted

After signing in and registering in the Technet Evaluation Center (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-sql-server-2016), I downloaded the ISO file to install SQL Server 2016 (General Availability, which was released today, the 1st of June). The downloaded ISO file can't be mounted in Windows 10 due to an error that says that the file is corrupted.

SQL Server on Linux

I have Signed up for SQL sever on Linux evaluation.

On March 16th, I received a download link from SQL server community for release candidate of SQL Server 2016.

But the link takes me to regular SQL server download page.

Was anyone able to successfully install SQL server on linux using the link provided in community newsletter?

Upgrading SSRS 2014 to 2016 - Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection.

I've just tried to upgrade our main SSRS 2014 instance to 2016.

It failed towards the end of the install with the following error:

The following error has occurred:

Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection.
Parameter name: index

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft%20SQL%20Server&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=50000&ProdVer=13.0.1601.5&EvtType=0x35C10BED%25400xF538E98B

It looked like SSRS was pretty much installed - but the service would start and stop again.

I've rolled the VM's and database back for the time being.

Anyone come across this when upgrading SSRS before? It looks like this error usually pops up at the report level.  I might try deleting all the reports and trying the upgrade again to rule them out

I have been trying to update my SQL2008R2 installation - running on Server 2008R2 with SP1 or SP2 or SP3.  Currently I get a daily failure for windows update of KB2716440.  I have tried running setup.exe from the original CD and then running a repair.   I get an error failure, outlined below.  I get similar errors for any of the service packs I try to install.  Thank you.

Express: Upgrade to Standard. Possible downgrade afterwards.

Hi everyone.

This is my first question here.

We have a SQL Express installed in a VM in Azure which is having some performance problems due to the increment of the business.

We would like to upgrade to a paid version to test the new performance. I guess this step should be quite easy. 30-days evaluation would be required.

The thing is that, if we don't notice an increment of performance, we would like to downgrade to the Express edition (for the moment).

Do you know if this can be done?

Thanks

Hi there,

After installation of my SQL Server 2016 RTM (Microsoft SQL Server 2016 (RTM) - 13.0.1601.5 (X64)
 Apr 29 2016 23:23:58
 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation
 Enterprise Evaluation Edition (64-bit) on Windows 10 Pro 6.3 <X64> (Build 10586: )

I've tried to install SSMS unsucessfully:

In this local machine there was not neither SQL Server 2016 CTPs or similar, just SQL Server 2014 Sp1.

Thanks for any input or hint,

I wanted to see the final migration assistants but the installer link goes to this, https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd146365.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

Can you upgrade the msi installer for the Upgrade Advisor? It still says preview.

How Can I Force Uninstall SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition when Control Panel Technique Fails?

$

How can I get rid of the following two entries in Control Panel that stubbornly refuse to go away, despite numerous attempts to get rid of them:

Microsoft SQL Server 2014 (64-bit) 12.0.2254.0

Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Setup (English)

Environment: Windows 10 64-bit (fully patched through May "patch Tuesday").

All SQL Server-related services are set to Manual Startup.

Here is what I have tried so far (all of which have failed to remove the above two entries in Control Panel):

1. Control Panel / Programs / Uninstall - goes through the motions of uninstalling and, on the 4th attempt (because all of the others failed to do what I expected - a clean/complete uninstall) I am still seeing the following error:

There are no valid SQL Server 2014 features to perform this operation

2. Manually right-click on anything with SQL Server in its name in Control Panel / Programs, after the last of which has been removed (except the two previously mentioned stubborn ones), I rebooted.

3. Mounted the SQL Server 2014 Developer edition installation media, copy/pasted everything to c:\aaSql2014, opened a command prompt *IN ADMINISTRATIVE MODE*, run setup.exe /ACTION=UNINSTALL.  That simply repeated the same error as before.

4. Ran a variation of the above:
setup.exe /action=uninstall /QS

which results in the following error:

Error result -2068643838

Result facility code: 1203

Result error code: 2

At this point, do I have to perform "registry hack surgery" to get rid of SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition?  If so, what entries need to be removed?

If you think development is tough now, think how hard it was using punched cards :-)

I have tried cleaning, then installing 2008 SQL server Express on Vista Ultimate 3 times and spent hours on this. I have installed regular SQL server on 2003 server with no issues many times, but I have huge issues with 2008 SQL server Express. I keep getting the proceeding errors.

Any ideas?

Upgrade SSRS from 2014 to 2016 causes web portal to fail in browser

Hi,

After testing an in-place upgrade on 2 different machines in our network running SQL 2014 Express with SSRS, I am having the same problem.

Upgrade install has no errors and appears to succeed, but after trying to browse to the web portal (http://localhost/reports) I get the following error in the browser:

The service is not available.
The report server has encountered a configuration error.

Have tried running the browser as administrator, this is also being executed with a domain admin account.

Also the log files from SSRS folder are showing the following errors:

library!ReportServer_0-1!968!06/06/2016-11:22:33:: i INFO: Call to ListChildrenAction(/, False).
library!ReportServer_0-1!968!06/06/2016-11:22:34:: e ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ServerConfigurationErrorException: AuthzInitializeContextFromSid: Win32 error: 1355, Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ServerConfigurationErrorException: The report server has encountered a configuration error. ;

After doing some testing, I have found that the only way to get it working (less than ideal) is to set the service to execute as my domain account user instead of the "Virtual Service" account that is set by default. No idea why this is, as it worked perfectly in that setup on SQL 2014.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks.

Update:

I've found that if I leave the Service Account in SSRS Configuration Manager set to "Virtual Service Account" as it is by default, but then run Internet Explorer as a Domain Admin user, the web portal executes properly!

So it seems related to the Virtual Service Account (NT Service\ReportServer$SQLEXPRESS)...

Windows Installer starts repeatedly event log messages

So, I installed SQL 2012 and then installed SP1 and then CU2 (when they had been available).

About a month ago, I install SP3 and then CU2, so I am at

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP3-CU2) (KB3137746) - 11.0.6523.0 (X64)
Mar  2 2016 21:29:16
Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation
Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.3 <X64> (Build 9600: ) (Hypervisor)

The other day I noticed in the application log are quite a few:

Message

Windows Installer reconfigured the product. Product Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 BI Development Studio. Product Version: 10.2.4000.0. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation. Reconfiguration success or error status: 0.

I don't know if these had been occurring before SP3 or not as the application log only has entries to May 18.

This url only mentions what to do with SP1, but not SP3: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2793634

Any ideas on how to fix?
