upgrading SQL - MSI not found - 2008R2SP2 => 2014

Hi All,

trying to upgrade a SQL 2008 R2 SP2 to SQL 2014.

This is a standalone SQL server installation with one default instance not part of a cluster or anything special.

  • The wizard completes with failures for the following components:
  • Management Tools - Complete
  • Management Tools - Basic
  • Reporting services - Native
  • Database Engine Services
  • Full-Text and semantic Extractions for search
  • SQL Client Connectivity SDK

The only components that seem to be upgraded are

  • SQL Browser
  • SQL writer
  • Setup Support Files

The components that were failed all have the same error message:

An error occurred for a dependency of the feature causing the setup process for the feature to fail.

If I look at the detail log file I see a lot of references to MSI files he cannot find.

for example:

(12) 2016-05-20 16:01:39 Slp: Sco: File 'F:\1033_ENU_LP\redist\VisualStudioShell\VSIntSetup\x86\vs_setup.msi' does not exist

If I look at the SQL 2014 media the path indeed does not exist. Could it be that the upgrade of SQL to 2014 needs the original SQL 2008 R2 (SP2) source?

Error Installing SQL 2016. Windows Installer does not have access to a dll required for setup

I have a laptop running 64 bit windows 10 with 8gb ram and 1tb of hd space.

Previously I had the SQL 2016 RC version installed and it worked fine on my machine. I thought of upgrading to the latest releases of SQL 2016. I got the installer files using my msdn license. Removed any previous sql installations and started installing from the package.

Each time I am getting the error ( see attached image ).

The error reads: There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A DLL required for this installation to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

I searched online and a few threads mentioned that I need to grant all privileges to all users on the 'Temp'directory for my user. I did that but still I am getting this error.

I have tried installing a few other versions of SQL 2016 such as the Standard, Web, Enterprise, Enterprise Core, Express (x64) but I get the same error each time.

I tried installing SQL 2014 express just so I could get back to working but that install failed as well.

Any help towards fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Do let me know if any more details are required.

Nuisance: Help Make Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Better

I work for a consulting firm. Customers are reporting being annoyed with the popup "Help Make Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Better". Some customers don't want to be bothered with this even once. Is there a way to keep this popup from ever appearing?

The customers are intelligent. They understand why the popup appears and what its purpose is. The only point to address is that the customers have paid for SQL Server, they are annoyed by this feature and they want a way to suppress it. I want to give the customers what they want. When customers tells me something is a nuisance, it's not my place to tell them they are wrong.

Can't upgeane SQL Server 2014 Developer to SQL Server 2016 Developer

(Let’s see if it all goes through this time)

According to this page (https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/ms143393), full upgrade from is supported.

However, I was only able to upgradeShare Features andRedistributable Features. I was never offered the option to upgrade mySQL Server 2014 Developer instance.

Even though the UI didn't match the instructions:

As can be seen, there's no Upgrade from SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2012, or SQL Server 2014, onlyUpgrade from a previous version of SQL Server.

I tried it anyway but nothing:

I already had SQL Server Management Studio 2016 installed.

Has anyone been able to do this?

SQL Server 2016 Setup Error (R Component)

Hi All,
During SQL Server 2016 Dev Installation I've probably had WiFi glitch or something and it failed to download some mysterious  cab files for R component. As a result shell thrown error (pointing to log .. couldn't download SRS_8.0.3.0_1033.cab file) .. next OK .. next Setup Completes (Both: R InDataBase and R Client marked red as failed, the rest is ok {SSAS/DB/SSAS/SSIS}).
Tried to ReRun Setup {both R elements marked as installed}. Now I can't remove R components {CheckBox shaded} and R won't work (because install failed). :\
Any advice on how to fix R install without reinstalling instance or even OS? Thanks.
{ grrr.. Just trying to be polite about this new MSft installation model where lots gets downloaded, no SSMS etc.., can't believe it's released with so many fails}

MS SQL Server Management Studio 2014 to manage 2008 R2 database

$

Hello,

I'm using MS SQL Svr Mgmt Studio 2008 R2 to create/modify tables, stored procs, etc (i'm a developer, not a DB Admin). I currently have some 2008 R2 databases i work with, and have to start working on some new 2014 databases. I'd prefer to have just one version of SSMS installed in my PC if possible...

Q1> Can I have SSMS 2014 installed, and get rid of SSMS 2008 R2, and still manage the 2008 R2 databases with SSMS 2014?

Q2> Can the install of SSMS 2014 take care of removing SSMS 2008 R2?

Thank you

Best regards,

Richard

SQL Server 2014 multiple licensed copies

We are a small shop. I have 1 VM to install SQL Server 2014. However, I am required to have a licensed copy for every contract we have. This means I can't install the databases into 1 copy. Contract A requires its own licensed copy and instance; Contract B requires its own licensed copy and instance.  Is it possible to install SQL Server 2014 in this fashion?
