Convert SQL server from Enterprise Edition -> Developer Edition
Installing application database on customer computer
We have a C#.net WPF application that uses a SQL Server back end. We will install SQL Express if needed as part of our installation process. What would be the best way to install our database? Backup/Restore?
Would it be best to assume a default instance of SQL Server - if InstallShield Express finds no SQL Server it will require installation. I assume that would be a default instance.
SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio install fails telling me to install Visual Studio 2008 SP1!
Hi,
I am getting the following error when trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio (SQLManagementStudio_x86_ENU.exe or SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe) on a new Toshiba Portege R830-10R:
Another version of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 has been detected on this system that must be updated to SP1. Please update all Visual Studio 2008 installations to SP1 level, by visiting Microsoft Update.
I have all Windows Updates installed on this machine and I DO NOT have VS 2008 installed on this computer (VS2008 was never installed on this computer), but VS 2010 SP1 with .Net Framework 4.0 SP1!
I have sent all day trying to install either ones of the above .exe, but always get the same error message.
I have checked the registry and see that I do not have a HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VS key but only a HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VC key (probably since I configured VS1010 for C#). The HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VC\Servicing\9.0 contains
SP = 1 and SPIndex = 1.
Please help.
Thanks.
Eric

SQL Server 2008 R2 problem, error 926
I have an installation on a private pc, SQL Server 2008 R2 developer edition. SQL Server Management Studio R2 does not work any more. I get the following error on startup of Management Studio:
database 'msdb' cannot be opened. It has been marked SUSPECT by recovery. See the SQL Server errorlog for more information. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error:926)
I cannot look into databases as before from SQL Server Management Studio. However, the databases are available from Visual Studio 2010 and can be opened from there.
I look into errorlog, I am able to run SP_readerrorlog for master database from SQL Serve Management Studio but it does not give me any answers.
My pc is set up with Visual Studio 2010 and afterwards I installed VS2012. Both VS installations coexist on the PC. I have not started to use VS 2012 yet.
I have no backup of the database. I have tried "repair" from the installation media. I still have the problem.

Tore

SQL 2K8 Installation Fails on Windows 2K8 R2 SP1
Hello -
Installation begins with a message from the Compatibility Assistant indicating that SQL Server 2008 has known compatibility issues. It says, "... you must apply SQL Server 2008 SP1 or a later service pack before you run SQL Server 2008 on this version of Windows." I have successfully run SQL Server 2008 SP3 to install pre-installation features. Nevertheless, installation of SQL Server 2008 fails with the following message: "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 installation has failed. SQL Server 2008 Setup requires .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed."
However, the .NET Framework 3.5 IS installed on the 2K8 R2 server and all OS updates have been applied. The SQL iso file has been downloaded on two separate occasions from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center and has been burned to DVD using two different computers and DVD drives, yet the installation of SQL still fails. This is a brand new installation of WIN2K8 R2 SP1 with no applications yet installed.
Any thoughts on a remedy?
Thanks,
Dan Moseley
Installing SQL Server 2008R2 (Developer Edition) on Windows 8 Enterprise
I'm trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 (Developer Edition) - 64bit on Windows 8 Enterprise and an error message comes up stating the SQL Server is not compatible with this version of Windows. Has anyone had any success in getting it installed and working? I was able to get it installed and running just fine on the Windows 8 Release Preview.
Thanks a bunch

Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Sdk.Sfc 11.0.0.0 Not Found
Hi Group.
Using the "Connect To Database" button in Server Explorer all goes well until I click the "OK" button in the Add Connection dialog. When this dialog goes to literally add the connection to Server Explorer I receive the error "Unable to Add connection...file not found". Note that upon testing the connection with the "Test Connection" button it checks out okay. The file it states that can't be found is: "Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Sdk.Sfc, version=11.0.0.0" or one of its dependencies.
I've tried:
1. Repairing Visual Studio via Uninstall/Repair
2. Using SQL's Server Installation Center to confirm all aspects are valid/correct - are
3. Searching for this error using the filename ...Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Sdk.Sfc and there are reports of this problem but their error references the file as having version 10; mine references 11 and as well I have completed all of the fixes they
suggest with no effect.
I am using Visual Studio 11 Developer Preview. My thoughts are that in re-installing SQL Server 2008 R2 Express I somehow have lost or changed this file from 11 back to 10 and that VS-11 DP requires version 11.
If I'm right would you know how to obtain this file or how to go about repairing the installation other than how I've tried? If my assumption is incorrect, how to fix this problem?
Thank you for all input!

SQL Server 2012 non cluster availability design consideration
What is the best practice for me to follow when consolidating multiple stand alone DB from SQL Server 2005 - 2008 boxes into just 2x SQL Server 2012 Enterprise nodes in two different sites (1 x physical server in PROD and 1 x physical server in DR with different geographical location and VLANs as well) ?
Because my understanding with SQL Server 2008 R2 (I Installed on top of the MSCS 2008 R2) is that I will need 2 nodes in each site as follows:
PRODSQL1
PRODSQL2
and then
DRSQL1
DRSQL2
respectively.
and the proposed design are as follows:
PRODSQL2012-1
DRSQL2012-1
only.
The problem is that not all of the Tier-1 app database has got Mirorring or Transaction log shipping capability, so I wonder what should I do to avoid major Database outage when I patch the PRODSQL2012-1 ?

SSMS 2012 reports "Cannot find one or more components"
I have been unable to install SSMS successfully from Sql Server 2012 Developer Edition. Although the setup program reports that all the components were successfully installed, whenever I start SSMS I get a message that says "Cannot find one or more components. Please reinstall the application."
I have followed several message threads on the forum with a similar problem, but none of the proposed solutions seems to work. I have done several complete re-installs. The .NET frameworks 3.5.1 and 4.5 are installed and up-to-date. The Database Engine seems to have installed correctly, since I can access it programmatically through a .NET SqlConnection.
The sql_ssms_loc_Cpu64_1033_1.log does contain several entries of the form:
<Func Name='SetCAContext'>
<EndFunc Name='SetCAContext' Return='T' GetLastError='203'>
and
<Func Name='Sqlmsirc_CheckFeatureDependency'>
No ref-count registry data found in SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\RefCount\sql_ssms_loc11\1033
<EndFunc Name='Sqlmsirc_CheckFeatureDependency' Return='0' GetLastError='2'>
I am installing on Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit.
